Update!

Monday, June 15, 2009

It's official! I will be serving as an AmeriCorps member in Cincinnati, Ohio, and I'll be working as a teacher's aide in an inner-city elementary school for the 2009-10 school year. Orientation is September 1st, and I'll be serving for 11 months.

Now that we're a few months into the year, some plans have been adjusted and I have been looking more into AmeriCorps programs in Ohio instead of grad school. I should find out in the next few months where I will be at the end of summer!

Welcome to 2009!

Life is a series of adventures, both large and small.

For the upcoming year I'm looking forward to my own adventures like being a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding, a few short trips (one may be international!), possibly going to grad school and moving (again).

I can't wait to see how the year pans out!

Reality Check

Who are we kidding? I don't have time to edit this website very often, but I'm going to at least try to mix it up a bit.

I first created this site as a way to keep my international friends up-to-date with things happening in my life, but as time passed, I became busier and neglected the site more and more. The truth is, sites like Facebook and MySpace have made it easy for anyone to 'have a website'. Unfortunately, I got sucked in and pretty much use Facebook for everything, including making photo albums. I got rid of my MySpace page over a year ago because I was sick of all the ads and spam messages.

I love photography and take pictures whenever I can. I also collect postcards for fun. Below you'll find a few postcards from my collection and a couple of my 'artsy' photographs. The column to to the right will be for other photos to keep the face of the site nice and fresh.

Hopefully, I'll come up with some more fresh ideas for the site soon.

P.S. The 'gringa' part of the website name comes from the fact that I studied abroad in Brazil and was 1 of the 2 Americans in the whole city.

Latest Adventures

Europe: Athens, Greece & Florence, Italy
May 2009 **featured in my blog**

This trip was only possible because of my mom, who got the tickets for me as an early birthday present. My sister had been studying abroad in Florence, Italy since January and her term just ended so we planned a trip to Greece together.

When my mother was in high school, she had a penpal, Eleni, in Athens that she kept in touch with all these years. Then, with the amazing power of Facebook, Eleni's daughter, Despina, my sister and I reconnected after 20 years. (We met once when we were children.)

We stayed with Eleni and her family for one week and they showed us around Athens and most of southern Greece and Poloponnisos. We couldn't have asked for better tour guides!

Then, Siena and I went to Florence, where she was my guide (and Italian translator) as she showed me around the city she had been living in for the past few months. It was an amazing trip!

Batavia, Ohio
May 2009

Soon after I got back from my trip to Europe, I made another trip out to Ohio for my friend's birthday. It was a short visit that lasted only a few days, but it was fun!

One night a bunch of his friends came over for a birthday celebration and there was lots of laughter throughout the house as Jared and his friends came up with some funny lyrics to some new songs they're working on. We even attempted to play a game of Hand & Foot.

The next day Aaron and I treated Jared to a nice birthday lunch/breakfast. It was great to see Jared again and meet a couple more of his friends!
